Evaluation: corporate video production.
As our task, we were asked to create a corporate video for the college. We had to meet with Jon Dack and Lottie who told us their ideas of what they wanted included in each of the videos. We were told that the video needed to 1 minute 30 seconds or at least as close to that point as we could get. The video needed to include different shots to show off our given topics in all the best ways possible. We had to also organise interviews with other members of staff who would then be able to either be included in the video or be able to point us in the direction of who could be in included to be able to talk about our chosen subjects. We then all got separated into groups who and were then allocated different areas of the college to produce a video about.
The video my partner and I got given was ‘support’. This meant that our main purpose of the video was to showcase the different kinds of support which the college has to offer. We got given three main areas of support that we needed to cover.
These included:
• Futures
• Pastoral support
• Additional learning support
In the video we had to include clips of both students and staff. We made sure to have a clip or two of a student talking so that the video felt more aimed towards a young person thinking to come to college instead of their parents. We also had to ensure that the video was 1min30secs which meant for each of our subtopics within the video were all around 40 seconds so there was enough for them to be explained and executed in the most informative way possible.
During the task I would say my favourite aspect of it would be although having to follow a brief, we still had a large amount of freedom of what we wanted the video to turn out like. This meant we were able to gather the shots that we felt were right and were able to make it look the exact way which we wanted, still following the brief, but it was still allowing us to show off our creative ideas.
During the task I would say the most challenging aspect would be getting people to having meetings with and who felt comfortable being interviewed on camera. My partner and I found this part quite difficult as we would schedule to meet up with people to interview them and then they would cancel last minute or not turn up.
I felt like getting given a brief and being told what needed to be included in the video was useful as it meant that we would never be stuck with what to film. It also meant that because we had an exact brief to follow, we didn’t have a block of ideas at the start and knew what we needed to do right from the very beginning. I also found that screening our first drafts to get feedback was extremely helpful as it allowed us to be able to make changes to make it more fitted to the brief. It allowed the clients as well as our peers to be able to let us know what may have needed to be added and in our case, it was to add some cutaway shots.
If I were to do this task again, I would chase up more people for interviews. We had a lot of issues with people cancelling and not turning up when we had arranged to meet with them so next time, I would ask more people so that if the original people asked did cancel, we would then have backup and still be able to progress forward.
